چکیده

Dhaded et al.(1) have recommended a cut-off level of 20 mg/dl for exchange transfusion in term babies with nonhemolytic jaundice. This is based on their observations that 21 out of 86 (25.8%) babies with bilirubin level of more than 20 mg/dl developed kernicterus in their study group. It is well known that apart from bilirubin levels per se, many other factors determine bilirubin toxicity. As the babies in the study were referred from other hospitals for treatment of jaundice, it is likely that details of risk factors may not have been known. No specific mention has been made about the presence or absence of risk factors except in 2 babies with birth asphyxia who developed kernicterus with bilirubin level of more than 20 mg/dl.

Early Predictors of Pathological Jaundice Due to Abo Hemolytic Disease

ABO hemolytic disease is the most common blood group incompatible hemolytic processes of the newborn period and is the major cause of neonatal jaundice attributed to maternal infant blood incompatibility. This was a prospective cohort study which included 50 consecutive term appropriate for gestational age babies with blood group either A, B or AB, born to O +ve mothers as the study group and a...

Acute bilirubin encephalopathy in healthy term neonates requiring exchange transfusion

Intruduction: There is a growing concern about an increasing bilirubin-induced neurological dysfunction (BIND) in healthy term neonates with no evidence of hemolytic disease or other risk factors. This study was done to determine the incidence of BIND in otherwise healthy, breast-fed newborn term infants without hemolysis who underwent exchange transfusion.   Methods: This study was conducted i...

Intermittent versus continuous phototherapy for the treatment of non-hemolytic moderate hyperbilirubinemia in term infants: a randomized controlled trial

Background: Phototherapy is the most effective treatment for neonatal jaundice and intermittent phototherapy is as effective as continuous phototherapy but with fewer complications and more benefits. This study compared the hospital length of stay, duration of phototherapy and the reducing rate of total serum bilirubin after 24 and 36 hours of phototherapy in two groups. Methods: The current d...

بررسی تاثیر کلوفیبرات بر زردی نوزادان

Abstract: Background: Hyperbilirubinemia is a common problem in newborn infants and may progress to kernicterus if not treated. The objective of this study was to determine the therapeutic effect of clofibrate in full-term healthy neonates with non-hemolytic hyperbilirubinemia. Material and method: A randomized clinical trial was performed on two groups of healthy full-term neonates with jau...

Evaluation of the Predictive Value of Umbilical Cord Serum Bilirubin Level for the Development of Subsequent Hyperbilirubinemia in Term and Late-Preterm Neonates

Background: Considering the increasing rates of early hospital discharge and kernicterus in healthy full term newborns, timely identification of neonates at risk of severe hyperbilirubinemia is of great significance. The aim of this study was to investigate the predictive value of umbilical cord serum (UCS) bilirubin level for subsequent hyperbilirubinemia. Moreover, we compared the predictive ...
